10 Educators from IPS Named Finalists for Hubbard Life-Changing Educator Award

to present $25,000 each to four winners – three teachers and one principal – on May 31

INDIANAPOLIS – Ten Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) educators out of 584 nominees have been chosen as finalists for this year’s Hubbard Life-Changing Educator Award, presented by United Way of Central Indiana. Now in its fourth year, the award honors teachers and principals who have made a significant difference in the classroom and in the lives of students.

At a reception on Wednesday, May 31, at the Eiteljorg Museum, three teachers and one principal will be presented with the Hubbard Award and will receive the $25,000 grand prize. The remaining six finalists will receive $1,000 each.

The finalists are:

IPS Teachers:
• Maggie Brown, SITE Program at IUPUI
• Michael Couch, Washington Irving School 14
• Julie Herdman, SUPER School 19
• Katherine Hinkle, Newcomer Program
• Sheila Long, Elder W. Diggs School 42
• Genevieve McLeish-Petty, Northwest High School

IPS Principals:

• Joyce Akridge, Carl Wilde School 79
• Jeremy Baugh, Lew Wallace School 107
• Christine Collier, Center for Inquiry School 70
• Shane O’Day, Shortridge High School

A volunteer committee of education experts reviewed the nominations and made the final selections. The teachers and principals were reviewed on instructional excellence, student achievement results, and how they invested in their students’ overall well-being.
