A Tribute to Jerry Harkness: Our Colleague, Champion and Friend
The United Way of Central Indiana family is deeply saddened with the passing of Jerry Harkness, a tried-and-true Hoosier, athlete, mentor, volunteer, and staunch advocate for our community.
Outside of his championship career in basketball, Jerry spent his life as a champion for causes he cared about, especially youth-supporting programs and activities. Among so many "firsts" in his lifetime, Jerry was United Way's first African American fundraising associate. He graciously served as United Way's Grand Marshall for the 100th Anniversary Celebration at the Speedway in 2018, and at that event, Jerry reminded us of the power to give back, the power to love others, and the power to serve the community.
United Way extends our sincere condolences to Jerry’s wife, Sarah, and the entire Harkness family.
