United Way of Central Indiana welcomes 23 professionals to leadership, board member development program
INDIANAPOLIS – For more than 30 years, United Way of Central Indiana has trained community leaders to serve on nonprofit boards through the Leadership United program.
This week, United Way welcomes 23 people – leaders within their own organizations – to the program’s spring 2022 session.
Over three months, participants receive training in fundraising, marketing, finance, legal issues, ethics, and diversity, equity and inclusion related to serving on a nonprofit board. They also learn about United Way’s work in data and research, grantmaking, sector support, equity action and public policy – and about poverty and the ALICE population United Way serves. An acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, ALICE represents those who earn above the Federal Poverty Level but not enough to afford a basic household budget.
During the program, participants are matched with one of United Way’s accredited community organizations and serve on that nonprofit’s board as a fellow for six months.
This session’s participants come from diverse backgrounds and industries, including the healthcare, legal, financial, corporate and nonprofit communities.
They bring with them energy, compassion and experience: “This group is passionate about getting involved in the community,” said Julie Plake, community engagement manager at United Way.
United Way runs two sessions of the program annually. To learn more or express interest in the fall 2022 session, visit uwci.org/leadership-united.
