United Way bringing Pulitzer Prize-winning author Matthew Desmond to speak in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS – United Way of Central Indiana is bringing Matthew Desmond, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “Evicted,” to speak this spring in Indianapolis.

Desmond will speak at 9 a.m. April 27 at the Indiana State Museum’s Dean and Barbara White Auditorium, 650 W. Washington St., Indianapolis.

His appearance coincides with the March release of his newest book, “Poverty, by America,” which will address why poverty persists in the U.S. Desmond is a sociology professor at Princeton University and the principal investigator of The Eviction Lab.

Desmond’s appearance is presented by United Way, alongside Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership, The Mind Trust and other community partners.

United Way seeks to serve those living in or near poverty in the region. In Central Indiana, more than 220,000 households are either in poverty or considered ALICE. An acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, ALICE households earn above the Federal Poverty Level but not enough to afford a basic household budget.
