United Way of Central Indiana and Central Indiana Labor Council sign new agreement

UWCI and CLC create first local agreement following a new national partnership model formed between United Way Worldwide and the AFL-CIO

United Way of Central Indiana (UWCI) and the Central Indiana Labor Council AFL-CIO (CLC) announced today that a new partnership agreement is in place that aims to drive positive, measurable and substantial impact in the Central Indiana region.

For 75 years, the American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) and United Way Worldwide have enjoyed a cooperative relationship through which they and state and local United Ways provide services to members of organized labor, their families and their communities. At the local level, CLC members have a long history of giving back to United Way and volunteering for various community service projects.

Today, this partnership expands to include broad union participation and recognition in United Way fundraising; implementation of jointly developed programs around United Way’s priority areas of Education, Income, Health and Basic Needs; tailored United Way community service projects for union volunteers; and access to United Way’s network of essential services for union members and their families in times of need. A designated United Way Labor Community Services Liaison will manage the partnership and programs.

“United Way of Central Indiana and the Central Indiana Labor Council share a vision of a strong, healthy community filled with stable, working families,” said Ann D. Murtlow, President & CEO of UWCI. “We are proud to join forces with the CLC in a more meaningful way to address and solve the most critical challenges of our communities.”

The CLC represents more than 35,000 members from 65 unions including construction trades, manufacturing, service industry and government agencies. The Central Indiana Labor Council represents organized workers from Boone, Marion, Hamilton, Hancock, Shelby, Johnson, Morgan and Hendricks counties, and the members can take collective action on important issues and directly affect the communities in which their members reside.

“CLC workers are our teachers, electricians, laborers, firefighters, trash collectors and homecare aids. They are our neighbors,” said Shawn Christ, President of CLC. “Our members love our community and want to serve as trusted partners. Together with United Way of Central Indiana, we can help meet the needs of our community and make our city a better place.”

The new partnership between UWCI and the CLC is the first local agreement following a new national partnership model formed between United Way Worldwide and the AFL-CIO.

“Community service is the foundation of the Labor Movement and United Way,” said Stacey D. Stewart, U.S. President of United Way Worldwide. “United Way and the AFL-CIO have banded together to strengthen our communities like never before. We look forward to seeing the positive impact that is made on the Central Indiana community because of this joint effort – the first local United Way and CLC to do so.”
