United Way of Central Indiana approaches 100% employee vaccination, organization calls on nonprofits and human service providers to require vaccination as a condition of employment
United Way: Requiring COVID-19 vaccination ensures a safe continuity of human services in Central Indiana
INDIANAPOLIS – United Way of Central Indiana, the region’s largest network of nonprofit and social service agencies, today announced it will reach 100% COVID-19 vaccination among its employees by the organization’s October 19 deadline.
In July, all United Way of Central Indiana employees received notice that COVID-19 vaccination is a condition of employment with the organization. As part of today’s announcement, United Way’s leaders called on other members of Central Indiana’s nonprofit community to require their employees to get vaccinated.
“As a leading voice in Central Indiana’s nonprofit sector, United Way of Central Indiana is compelled to do our part to put an end to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said President and CEO Ann Murtlow. “We recognize that we cannot deliver human services safely or effectively without the vaccination, and we are proud of our employees for embracing this requirement. We encourage others in our sector to make a similar commitment to vaccination – not only because it allows them to continue their critical work, but because it is the right thing to do.”
Amid the pandemic, some nonprofits and human service providers were forced to pivot their in-person services to an online format, placing a strain on resources and employees and presenting barriers for clients who lack access to technology or internet. Vaccination requirements allow providers to safely return to in-person services while protecting employees and the people they serve.
“The health of our employees is United Way’s top priority, said MeChelle Callen, chief talent and culture officer, United Way of Central Indiana. “Having a fully vaccinated workforce will allow our organization to safely collaborate with our colleagues and continue to support our community during this unprecedented time in history.”
According to the Marion County Public Health Department, less than half (48%) of eligible Marion County residents are fully vaccinated. In United Way of Central Indiana’s service area of Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Morgan and Putnam counties, vaccination rates range from 37% to 63%, according to covidactnow.org.
