Meet the finalists: 2024 ELEVATE Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advocate of the Year, presented by Eli Lilly and Company

The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advocate of the Year award, presented by Eli Lilly and Company, will be given to a young professional who, either through an employer or as a volunteer, is committed to raising awareness and advocating for a more diverse, equitable and inclusive Central Indiana. 

This year’s finalists are leaders for change in our community. They are empowering youth, working to eliminate health disparities, supporting those who are underserved as they navigate illness, challenging societal norms around body image and promoting STEM education.  

We hope you can join us in February to celebrate these five impressive finalists: 

Maria De Leon, human resources associate in diversity, equity and inclusion at Eli Lilly and Company:  

As a human resources associate in diversity, equity and inclusion, Maria isn't just cultivating a workplace of inclusivity – she's sowing seeds of impact across the entire Central Indiana community. A philanthropic force, Maria dedicates her time to TeenWorks, the Domestic Violence Network, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Indiana, and Butler University's Latinx Alumni Association. Not to mention her brainchild, Indy Networking, a platform uniting professionals across Indianapolis. Maria's journey is rooted in her personal experiences and driven by an unwavering commitment to empower the youth. Her vision for Central Indiana? A vibrant community where individuals are inspired to pursue their dreams and celebrated for their cultural diversity, leaving an indelible mark on the world.

Jasmine Johnson, assistant professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Indiana University School of Medicine:  

Jasmine is a trailblazer in the world of health care. As an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, Jasmine isn't just delivering babies – she's delivering change. With a focus on researching the downstream effects of racism on pregnancy outcomes, Jasmine is on a mission to eliminate health disparities and champion diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in the workforce. Serving on both local and national committees, she's a fierce advocate for historically minoritized populations, ensuring that all patients receive the best possible care. As a Black woman and mother of two, this work is deeply personal for Jasmine. Her vision for Central Indiana is community where every person, regardless of race, ethnicity or socioeconomic status, receives equitable pregnancy care as a basic human right.

Demarcus Langston, manager of client services at Little Red Door Cancer Agency: 

With his background in helping medically underserved residents of Central Indiana get the care they need, Demarcus has a heart as big as the Hoosier State. From managing programs that provide essential support to those battling cancer in Indiana to his infectious dedication to philanthropy, Demarcus is the true definition of a superhero. Growing up with firsthand knowledge of the struggles faced by many in the community, he's on a mission to make sure that no one navigates illness alone. His dedication to providing hospitality, community and comfort to those in times of sickness and struggle are shaping the Indianapolis landscape. His vision for Central Indiana: A community that feels like a warm hug for everyone, embracing diversity and extending the Hoosier hospitality to every corner.

Ellise Smith, director of diversity, equity and inclusion at IUPUI’s Division of Student Affairs:  

As the director of diversity, equity and inclusion, Ellise is not just breaking barriers – she's reshaping the narrative around diversity with flair and determination. From challenging societal norms about body image through her creative ventures, including Fatness Fiction and +Plus Size Magic Radio, to hosting an inaugural body diversity conference, Ellise is a force to be reckoned with. Her journey began as a graduate student, using her experiences to create platforms for silenced narratives. With a podcast boasting over 150 interviews, an independent magazine, a photography business and a doctoral pursuit on the experiences of fat bodies, Ellise's commitment to inclusivity is unmatched. Ellise's vision for Central Indiana involves a community that embraces body diversity, challenges unjust systems and creates a more fair and just society.

Luke Zhang, prototype lead at Resultant: 

Luke isn't just crafting solutions as the prototype lead at Resultant. He's molding the future of Central Indiana with a passion for philanthropy and volunteerism that's nothing short of inspiring. From serving as a Mitch Daniels Leadership Foundation fellow to taking on roles like technology committee chair on the Board of Directors at CFA Society Indianapolis, Luke is a force of positive change. His dedication to STEM education shines through mentoring programs, judging tech competitions and serving on various tech-related boards, reinforcing his belief in the power of knowledge-sharing for a brighter future. A first-generation immigrant chasing the American dream, Luke's commitment to promoting DEI, STEM and Indiana is rooted in gratitude for the support he received. His vision for Central Indiana is a friendly, diverse and thriving community that stands as a beacon for cities and states across the Midwest.
