Meet the finalists: 2025 ELEVATE Emerging Leader of the Year

The Emerging Leaders of the Year award will be given to a person or group who has used their passion for philanthropy, personal development and community to engage their peers in a project that has made a positive impact in the community.  

This year’s finalists are leaders for change in our community, and we’re thrilled for you to join us in celebrating their accomplishments at United Way’s 7th annual ELEVATE on Feb. 22.  

Here are our five finalists:  

 

Casey Crouse, account manager at GadellNet Consulting Services: 

Casey Crouse is a finalist for this award because of his spirit for serving others and the execution of his vision. He founded the nonprofit New Shoe Day as a grassroots movement to create connection across Indianapolis by providing shoes to kids who wouldn't otherwise have safe, comfortable footwear. New Shoe Day has provided over 3,000 pairs of shoes to kids in the community, including athletic teams at Providence Cristo Rey High School, Purdue Polytechnic, Paramount Englewood Middle School and IPS 34 Elenor Skillen. His work with New Shoe Day has also created opportunities for other young professionals to give back to the community through board participation and volunteer opportunities. Casey has also led other organizations in the Indianapolis community, including the Riley Children’s Foundation board and through participation in the Mitch Daniels Leadership Foundation Class.

Peter Hanscom, chief development officer at Free Press Indiana: 

Peter Hanscom has impacted his community through many different professional and civic pursuits. In his current role with Free Press Indiana, Peter champions initiatives that address critical gaps in local journalism and fosters opportunities for young professionals to grow and thrive. His efforts have elevated diverse voices in journalism and empowered these same voices to make a meaning impact in their communities. Previously, Peter was the chief brand officer at United Way of Central Indiana, where he led signature fundraising events including Over the Edge and Care-oke and led the marketing efforts during the pandemic for the Central Indiana COVID-19 Community Economic Relief Fund. Peter was also a mentor for many United Way employees who credit his mentorship as a catalyst for their success. Peter is a 2021 Indianapolis Business Journal Forty under 40 honoree and also serves on the board of Emerging Leaders Project.

Mai Khin, Dr. Bawi M Lian, Lian Sang, Thla Tial, Burmese American Community Institute: 

Mai Khin, Dr. Bawi M Lian, Lian Sang and Thla Tial are program directors and managers at the Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) on the southside of Indianapolis. BACI provides essential human services, educational and vocational support to Burmese and other immigrant populations in greater Indianapolis. BACI plays a critical role regionally, nationally and globally, serving not only Burmese immigrants but also refugees from Afghanistan, Ukraine, Haiti and other nations, using strategic partnerships and advocacy efforts. In 2023, BACI became the third refugee resettlement agency in Indianapolis and continues to expand its impact through programs like the Welcome Corps. With the dedication of these leaders, BACI has served over 25,000 people since its inception and remains a trusted resource for building self-sufficiency and success within diverse communities.

Samantha Miller, instructional design specialist at Gene B. Glick Company: 

Samantha aims to create deep connections by breaking down divides across neighborhoods and generations in Central Indiana. She seeks to create a sense of belonging and safety by ensuring our community members can access the support they need. Their commitment to volunteerism and leadership shines through roles at the Carmel Farmers Market and Habitat for Humanity, where they work to create inclusive, supportive environments. Their passion for diversity and inclusion is evident in their work with the Indiana United Methodist Conference, facilitating cultural awareness and equity within congregations.

Derion Searcey, government relations manager at RJL Solutions: 

Since beginning his political journey in 2022, Derion has demonstrated exceptional leadership, advocacy and dedication to empowering and advancing young professionals. Starting as an intern with the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus, he quickly advanced to the role of executive director, where he supported 15 Black state elected officials in advocating for legislation that critically impacted Black and Brown Hoosiers. Beyond legislative work, Derion mentored minority interns at the Indiana State Capitol and joined the Marion County Young Democrats board, working to support campaigns of young candidates. On a national level, Derion serves as vice chair of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators on the board of the National Black Leadership Staff Legislative Council, advocating for young professionals and supporting black caucuses nationwide. His unwavering passion for uplifting others and creating pathways for young leaders exemplifies his dedication to fostering more inclusive and dynamic leadership for our community.
