Q: How did you react when you found out you were nominated for an ELEVATE Award?
A: When I first found out I was nominated I cried to be perfectly honest. The person who nominated me is someone I look up to and is an incredible role model in our organization. The category has so much weight behind it, and being selected for an event hosted by United Way of Central Indiana is such a privilege. I am so excited to use this platform to share more information about the work that I have done and continue to do.
Q: What is your vision for Central Indiana?
A: My vision can be summed up in one simple, yet powerful word… opportunity. Central Indiana has a portfolio of opportunity ahead of it with White River expansion plans, innovative dining experiences, inspiring fine arts and a much-needed hunger coalition. Our sports and tech industries continue to bring people to the area and our reputation continues to grow on the national platform. My vision for Central Indiana also includes the youth of this community. They are leading the city to be more diverse, tolerant, inclusive and considerate of our differences. Our state is in great hands with these young citizens, and they are the foundation of my vision.
Q: Finish this sentence “Being a great ambassador means to me….”
A: To me, it means you’re a genuine and authentic listener. I believe being an active advocate for a cause starts with putting your preconceived notions about a topic aside and integrating yourself in their world for a moment. I also believe that an ambassador has changed, in years past someone at a podium or in a crowded lecture hall could be considered the traditional ambassador. Now, a mother sharing her struggles at a town hall meeting or a young boy making baked goods for first responders in their area can be recognized as community ambassadors. All it takes is a good ear.
Q: What have you learned about yourself during the pandemic and how has it affected your job, volunteering, etc.?
A: The pandemic has taught me that it is okay to rest. I can’t remember a time where I have intentionally rested and stepped away from the unspoken, hovering obligation to use all of my energy to give back. The pandemic forced me to pause and take a moment to ask, “Can I show up for my community when I’m not showing up for myself?” I now feel more balanced, energized and more grateful than ever for quality time with friends, family and colleagues. In regards to my job, I’m grateful to work for an organization that turned its focus towards the pandemic and COVID relief efforts with the creation of Indianapolis Indians charities.
