Last year, more than 7,500 tax returns were prepared for individuals and families at no cost, resulting in more than $10 million in refunds
INDIANAPOLIS – Each year, thousands of Central Indiana residents pay hundreds of dollars to file their taxes, without knowing they may be eligible for free filing. Indy Free Tax Prep, a network of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites, works to help ease the financial burden of the tax preparation process and ensure individuals and families with a household income of $64,000 or less receive their full tax refund.
Indy Free Tax Prep will offer services in Marion, Hendricks, Morgan and Boone Counties. Taxpayers may visit IndyFreeTaxPrep.com or call 2-1-1 for more details, locations, hours and information to schedule an appointment at a nearby site. Taxpayers with a combined household income of $64,000 or less can also choose to self-file their taxes online for free at myfreetaxes.com.
An Indy Free Tax Prep kickoff event to celebrate the opening of tax preparation sites will be held on Thursday, February 2 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Broad Ripple Park. Program partners include: City of Indianapolis, United Way of Central Indiana, Ivy Tech Community College, Huntington Bank, Indy Parks, Fairfield Outdoor and IndyGo.
This year, individuals who claim the Earned Income Tax Credit and/or Additional Child Tax Credit should expect a delay in their return due to a new law that requires the IRS to hold these refunds until February 15. With this new law, returns will be delayed until the week of February 27. The assistance of a trained tax preparer can help individuals plan for this type of information.
In 2016, more than 7,500 tax returns were prepared for Central Indiana residents at no cost, resulting in more than $10 million in refunds and $1.8 million saved in tax preparation services. Indy Free Tax Prep volunteers are certified by the IRS and are available on-site to provide free, basic federal and state tax return preparation. To learn more visit indyfreetaxprep.com.
