Serving Families Block by Block: MLK Center and Great Families 2020

“An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.” These words, spoken by Martin Luther King Jr., ring true to the work Martin Luther King Community Center does in our community.

Because of its innovative programs and community focus, MLK Center was awarded $675,000 over the span of three years by United Way of Central Indiana as part of the Great Families 2020 initiative in partnership with the Social Innovation Fund. MLK Center has committed to using these funds to support families — children ages 0-5 and their parents — by connecting them to high quality early childhood education providers, wellness coaching and financial coaching.

Great Families 2020 (GF2020) is a United Way initiative that uses a two-generation approach to improve the lives of Indianapolis families living in poverty. This is accomplished by establishing neighborhood support networks that provide integrated services in education, financial stability, and health for both parents and children.
