School's Out, but Indy LINC Encourages Summer Learning

United Way of Central Indiana is dedicated to fighting for the education, financial stability, health and basic needs of every person in our community. We take on the complex issues, so when the Julian Center expressed interest in teaming up to pack backpacks with critical summer items for the kids who take refuge there, we couldn’t wait to get involved! The Julian Center, one of our partner agencies, has supported victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and other life crises and their children since 1975. Their mission is to provide the services victims need to recover and build a life absent of abuse. Even further, the Julian Center knows that ending the cycle of abuse begins with creating safe and positive environments for children.Research suggests when out of school for the summer, children from unstable environments are more likely to lose important skills they mastered during the school year. To combat this, local millennial philanthropists from United Way’s LINC program came together on May 30th to pack 140 backpacks full of the essentials – books, colored paper, markers, worksheets and more. Their mission? To provide fun, educational and creative tools for these children to stay happy and engaged throughout the entire summer. But that’s not all we did -- setting aside some playtime with the kids in the Julian Center’s backyard was a highlight for the group. After playing catch, creating some sidewalk chalk masterpieces and meeting new friends, LINC members got to hand out the summer backpacks. Especially excited, one little boy exclaimed, “I got a Magic Treehouse book, Mom!” Their smiles were a perfect end to a great evening.LINC harnesses the power of individuals under 30 to care for the common good. Together, we help kids in our community succeed in school, families gain stability and neighbors overcome hardships. LINC gives Millennials an opportunity to make a real difference, share their knowledge, apply their skills, volunteer and network.
