Move Over, Millennials: Gen Z is Here
Technology is changing the way we think about philanthropy. Take Go Fund Me, for example - when someone you know asks their network to support a local nonprofit or a national event, you like, share and maybe even give. Or perhaps you “click to learn more” when one of your Facebook friends asks for a donation to a cause they’re passionate about in honor of their birthday. But if you’re Kara Miller, a graduate of Purdue University and a business development associate for Salesforce, you take it upon yourself to make lasting change and connect with others in ways that go beyond a computer screen. For her 23rd birthday, Kara made a personal donation to United Way of Central Indiana and, with the generous support of Salesforce, used their employee match to join United Way LINC®, a national initiative that provides 21-30-year old’s with unique, hands-on volunteer opportunities with a social twist. After attending multiple LINC events and learning more about United Way’s efforts to break the cycle of poverty in central Indiana, she felt compelled to do more. After learning more about how she could develop as a young leader, Kara asked to join the LINC Steering Committee. She becomes the group’s first leader considered “Generation Z” - the cohort of young professionals born after 1995, and now the newest employees to the national workforce. We asked Kara about what keeps her inspired to remain involved in her community. What does it mean to be working for a company that cares so much about connecting employees with causes they are passionate about? I am so proud and humbled to work at Salesforce – a company that sincerely supports their employees’ passions for volunteerism and supporting worthy causes. I get to work alongside colleagues who deeply care about a wide variety of issues and are committed to local organizations; everything from rescuing animals to encouraging children to read at grade level. What do you love most about Indy so far? My favorite part of Indy is the people. Everyday I’m surrounded by compassionate, dedicated and inspiring individuals at work and within the community. I am proud to be a Hoosier and greatly enjoy celebrating the many rich Indiana traditions! What do you want other young people to know about the impact they can have – personally and professionally in our community? I believe that positive impact sends amplifying waves of encouragement and hope throughout central Indiana. There is never too small of a good deed. Small acts of kindness do not go unnoticed. There are many community-based organizations doing incredible work. I love learning about what they need and how I can help. United Way LINC® has been a perfect place for me to jump headfirst into how I can get hands-on involved. I can volunteer with others who care too and make a positive difference at scale. Even better? We have a great time giving back together! Kara is a part of the Salesforce Ohana, the overarching concept of family, community, and collaboration that drives Salesforce camaraderie and culture. She discusses this and more in her recent LinkedIn post. To engage the next generation of philanthropists, volunteers and advocates United Way LINC® connects young professionals with worthy causes. With a local membership in central Indiana of over 300 members, LINC events allow young professionals an outlet to make a difference and broaden their social network of peers and friends. We are good deeds and a good time. Join Kara and other young professionals with a LINC membership, today.
