New United Way donor selected among 3,238 to win Super Bowl tickets

Local Becknell Industrial employee wins trip to Super Bowl 51 with airfare and accommodations provided by the Indianapolis Colts

When Conn Zickmund made his first donation to United Way of Central Indiana in 2016, he never thought it would land him the opportunity of a lifetime to go to the Super Bowl with all expenses covered by the Indianapolis Colts. Zickmund, an accountant at Becknell Industrial, joined United Way of Central Indiana and The Indianapolis Colts for an announcement and media event at the Colts Complex. Ann D. Murtlow, President & CEO, United Way of Central Indiana, and Kalen Jackson, Vice Chair/Owner, The Indianapolis Colts, co-presented the oversized tickets and prize package, which contained Super Bowl tickets, airfare and accommodations. Thursday, January 19th started out to be a regular day for the Becknell Industrial employee. He dropped his wife off at work and headed down the road to his office. In unusual fashion, Zickmund decided to stop and purchase a couple scratch off tickets for $10. Much to his surprise, he won $100, which was just the beginning to a very lucky day. Around lunchtime, he missed a phone call from United Way of Central Indiana’s president and CEO, Ann Murtlow, who left a voicemail thanking him for his recent gift to United Way. Having completed an internship with a nonprofit organization in college, he thought it was just a nice gesture to thank him for his donation. When they finally connected later in the day, Ann informed him that he won a raffle. When she asked him, “Do you know what you won?” He couldn’t believe what came next, “Tickets and an all-expense paid trip Super Bowl 51 in Houston, Texas!” “I was in complete disbelief,” said Zickmund. “I actually thought someone was playing a prank on me.” The promotion, in its seventh year, encourages new or increased gifts of $150 to United Way. Zickmund, a 2016 IU graduate, decided to support United Way during his company’s workplace campaign because he knew his dollars would go to good use in the community. But he admits he had no idea when he made a contribution, he would be among 3,238 other donors eligible to win a Super Bowl prize package. The decision to bring his wife, Jessica, who is a lifelong Indianapolis Colts fan, was easy. The couple was recently married in October of 2016, and stayed local in lieu of going on an expensive honeymoon. When Zickmund picked his wife up from work later that day he couldn’t wait to share the exciting news with her. Now, not only will they get to experience a once in a lifetime trip to the Super Bowl, but the newlyweds will get their honeymoon after all.
