Top 5 Reason to Become a ReadUP Tutor For 2021-2022 School Year

For 14 years, United Way of Central Indiana has worked with school districts in our community to sponsor ReadUP, a literacy initiative to help third-grade students get on track – and stay on track – with grade-level literacy.

ReadUP connects volunteers with local elementary schools, where they spend an hour reading with two students each week. We know that children who read at or above grade-level are more likely to succeed in school and in life. Students can achieve this through the support of their tutors, while growing in confidence and finding an appreciation for reading.

There are a million reasons why becoming ReadUP tutor is a fulfilling activity and a great way to become even more connected in our community, but sharing the Top 5 reasons seemed a bit more realistic:

1) Literacy is important.

ReadUP is now more important than ever. COVID has disrupted student learning and we want to keep students from falling even further behind. By volunteering you will help support student success.

2) Make a difference in a child’s life.

Watch the growth – You’ll get a chance each week to see how students improve with their vocabulary & comprehension.

Put a smile on a child’s face – Our ReadUP students love their tutors and are always excited for their sessions.

Be a positive role model – Students always need positive adult interactions. It helps develop confidence and relationship building skills.

3) Volunteer close to work or home.

ReadUP will be in 28 different schools for the 2021 – 2022 program year. The locations span across 6 counties (Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Marion, and Morgan). Volunteer close to your work or home.

4) Build a sense community.

You will be joining more than 1,200 ReadUP volunteers who have participated through the history of this 14-year-old program. We can’t wait to have you join the ReadUP family!

5) Have fun!

Have a great time engaging with students while reading. We all know reading is fun. Explore different worlds and take adventures with your students by journeying through different types of books. Plus volunteers get free ReadUP swag!
