Helping students get on track and stay on track with grade-level literacy

United Way’s signature literacy initiative connects volunteers with local elementary schools, where they spend an hour reading with two students for 30 minutes each week, helping students get on track and stay on track with grade-level literacy. Some volunteers choose to join the program with a partner, splitting the time commitment and participating every other week.

Volunteer registration for the 2025-2026 program year opens Friday, August 1.

ReadUP has helped students reach grade-level literacy for 18 years. The program focuses on third grade, a pivotal year when students shift from learning to read to reading to learn. Reading comprehension at this stage is a strong predictor of future academic success.

ReadUP volunteers support hundreds of students across more than 20 Central Indiana school districts each year, from September through May. Along with improved academic outcomes, students often leave the program with greater confidence and a deeper love of reading.

Volunteers are required to complete a background check and a one-hour, virtual training session.
