United Way of Central Indiana Names Goodpaster New VP of Public Policy, Promotes VanSlambrook to VP of Community Impact
INDIANAPOLIS, October 22, 2018 – United Way of Central Indiana (UWCI) today announced that Mindi Goodpaster has been named the organization’s Vice President of Public Policy, while Sara VanSlambrook has been promoted to Vice President of Community Impact. Goodpaster will lead UWCI’s work to advocate for public policies that help eliminate barriers to education, financial stability, health and basic needs in our community. In her elevated role, VanSlambrook will lead United Way’s efforts to move families toward self-sufficiency, while continuing work to meet Hoosiers’ basic needs and to spur innovation in Central Indiana’s human services sector. “United Way’s increased focus on impact has taught us that advocating for smart, two-generation public policies is critical to meeting our ambitious community goals,” said Ann D. Murtlow, president and CEO, UWCI. “Mindi’s hire and Sara’s promotion reflect our commitment to reimagining the way UWCI engages our community partners and lawmakers in the increasingly complex fight against poverty.” About Mindi GoodpasterGoodpaster joins UWCI after serving as the Director of Public Policy and Advocacy for the Marion County Commission on Youth (MCCOY), where she advocated for sound local, state, and national youth-related policy, including leading a group of child advocacy organizations to pass the 2013 anti-bullying law and a group of stakeholders to pass the 2017 suicide prevention law. Prior to this position, Goodpaster spent 11 years in Washington, D.C., where she gained experience in youth advocacy, government affairs and public relations in various roles with the Mental Health Association of Montgomery County, Maryland, the National Cancer Institute, Bristol-Myers Squibb and the office of Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA). She began her career in child welfare in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.Goodpaster is the past president of the Children’s Coalition of Indiana (CCI), a board member of the Indiana Coalition for Human Services (ICHS), a 2012 graduate of Leadership United and a 2014 Journey Fellow. She is a recipient of the 2007 National Association of Counties Montgomery’s Best Award and a 2017 recipient of the Indiana Suicide Prevention Network Advocate Award. She earned a master’s degree in social work with a concentration in social policy, planning and administration from The Catholic University of America and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in social work from Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. About Sara Van SlambrookVanSlambrook most recently served as the Senior Director of Strategic Initiatives at UWCI, where she led a portfolio of initiatives around education, financial stability, and two-generation approaches to combatting poverty. Before that, she directed Great Families 2020, United Way’s four-year initiative to improve family stability for vulnerable children and their parents living in five neighborhoods in Indianapolis. Prior to UWCI, VanSlambrook worked as a senior program officer for the Local Initiatives Support Coalition, Indianapolis (LISC) where she pioneered the concept of quality-of-life planning in Indianapolis neighborhoods and spearheaded the Great Places 2020 initiative.She has twenty years of experience in the nonprofit sector with expertise in program development, community engagement, fundraising, evaluation, and financial management. She is a board member of Project Home Indy, a steering committee member of Great Places 2020, and a member of United Way’s Diversity Leadership Circle. She was a 2018 Tobias Fellow, 2014 Plan 2020 Fellow, and a graduate of the Stanley K. Lacy Executive Leadership Series Class XLI. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Social Justice at Saint Mary’s College and her Master of Business Administration and Master of Science in Social Administration from Case Western Reserve University. Additionally, she holds a certificate in fundraising management from Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.
