United Way of Central Indiana and Duke Energy Sign Strategic Partnership, Strengthen Relationship and Impact on the Community
Duke Energy Indiana President Melody Birmingham-Byrd and United Way of Central Indiana President and CEO Ann Murtlow sign strategic partnership agreement at the United Way Board Retreat INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Duke Energy and United Way of Central Indiana strengthened their relationship and community impact this morning by signing a strategic partnership at United Way’s annual board retreat. This agreement furthers Duke Energy’s and United Way’s ability to make measurable progress on shared social impact agendas, which will provide value to corporate partners and to United Ways around the state. Duke Energy Indiana President Melody Birmingham-Byrd, who also serves on the United Way’s board of directors, and United Way President and CEO Ann D. Murtlow signed the formal agreement. United Way and Duke Energy Indiana have a long-standing relationship that has promoted philanthropic giving through workplace campaigns and other programs that have contributed greatly to improving communities and lives around the country. Duke Energy Indiana has consistently received the “Company That Cares” award and supported other United Ways around the state of Indiana. The Strategic Partnership Agreement between United Way and Duke Energy allows both organizations to maximize opportunities to meet priorities among partner leadership and promote collaboration and learning. The partnership includes the following areas of collaboration:
- Employee Engagement - United Way and Duke Energy Indiana will partner to provide employees with education, personal experience and engagement in aligned community efforts.
- Education – Together, United Way and Duke Energy will promote quality learning opportunities that prepare children to be career-college-ready, healthy and self-sufficient.
- Human Services Network - Improve the health and quality of life of people in the communities in which Duke Energy Indiana and United Way operate.

“This is a case where 1+1 equals more than 2,” said Duke Energy Indiana President Melody Birmingham-Byrd. “Partnering with the United Way multiplies the ways we can make a difference in the state. We can expand our reach and impact with this collaboration.” This is the fourth strategic partnership agreement between United Way of Central Indiana and a major corporate partner. In February of 2016, United Way Worldwide, United Way of Central Indiana and Eli Lilly and Company signed an agreement that elevated Lilly employee engagement, advocacy and volunteerism in communities across the globe. In March of 2017, OneAmerica signed an agreement emphasizing the company’s values of improving the quality of life in its shared community while being a strategic partner with United Way, focusing on overall impact through ongoing volunteerism and advocacy, in addition to dollars raised and invested. During the August 24, 2017 United Way Board Retreat, St. Vincent also signed a strategic partnership agreement. “Duke Energy has been a community leader for decades, collaborating with organizations to improve the quality of life in our community, through advocacy, volunteerism, civic leadership and philanthropic giving,” said Ann Murtlow, president and CEO of United Way of Central Indiana. “United Way is proud to partner with Duke Energy as we work together to strengthen our communities.”
