Why do data and research matter?

Using data and research to frame the needs of our community helps United Way prioritize the people, places and programs where our investments make the most measurable impact. It can also identify gaps where new partnerships and advocacy efforts are needed to build a stronger human services sector.

Data is analyzed across our region, and disaggregated by key demographic features like race, gender identity, and age. These insights are essential as we seek to achieve equity and lift up the voices and experiences of diverse communities throughout Central Indiana.

All partners who receive funding from United Way must collect and track data on the individuals and families they serve. When combined, data from our partners reveal the challenges and opportunities for people living in, or one emergency away from, poverty.

As we seek to advance data collection and sharing, we are grateful for the diligence of our partners. While the numbers on each dashboard convey the power of collective impact, they also represent real people and the lived experiences of adults, children and families in our region.

Most importantly, these dashboards demonstrate the significant impact our sector can have in our community by working together.

Poverty is a complex, stubborn problem that creates barriers to upward mobility. United Way and its partners collect data around key areas of need for people living in or near poverty.

The focus areas below showcase data that illustrates community needs and a summary of the collective impact of our partners and their important work throughout Central Indiana.

People Impacted:

United Way of Central Indiana’s partners collect data on the impact of their work and the demographic information of those they serve. This data helps us understand community needs and people who might be underserved, which then guides our planning, grantmaking, policy development, and decision making around future investments and programs.

ALICE & Poverty:

More than a third of individuals and families in Central Indiana are living in, or are one emergency away from, poverty. This includes people who are ALICE, which stands for Asset-Limited, Income Restrained, and Employed.

Healthy Food Access:

Access to nutritious and affordable food is fundamental to helping Hoosiers live, work, learn, and play. However, more than 190,000 individuals in Central Indiana – including 62,000 children – lack reliable access to food.

Economic Mobility:

In Central Indiana, poverty is close to inevitable for low-wage workers, especially those with children. Earnings have not kept pace with the cost of living, and many people face systemic inequities which exacerbate this problem.

Educational Success:

Research proves that a quality education is the best path out of poverty. This path begins with early childhood education and can stretch all the way through adulthood.

Physical, Mental, & Behavioral Health:

Poor overall health exacerbates the challenges of finding stable employment, taking care of family members, and planning for the future. Improving overall health — which includes physical, behavioral and mental health, can help Hoosiers live to their potential.

Safe and Affordable Housing Access & Retention:

Every person needs a place to call home. But for too many individuals and families, the struggle to keep up with housing costs to avoid eviction and homelessness is an everyday reality.

Sector Support:

United Way is proud to partner with a powerful network of community-based organizations tackling the most complex issues facing our region. With support from Lilly Endowment Inc and others, we support capacity building, infrastructure investments, leadership development and technical assistance.

Transportation Access:

When individuals and families do not have access to affordable and reliable transportation, they can struggle to complete essential tasks like going to work, shopping for groceries, and seeing the doctor. Improving access to transportation can enable everyone to meet their basic needs
