10 Great New Year’s Resolutions

As December winds down and 2017 comes to a close, it’s time to look on the horizon and what lies ahead in 2018. A new year brings forth fresh hope, exciting possibilities, renewed energy and, more than likely, a resolution or two. If you’re procrastinating on making up your mind on your New Year’s resolutions, here are some great ideas to inspire your list for 2018.

  1. Start planning your year now. Time flies – how is it already the end of 2017? Get a jump on next year by beginning to plan your calendar now. From fun events and trips to noting birthdays and holidays, get ahead by opening that planner (or phone calendar) now.
  2. Volunteer more. An easy place to find opportunities is through our online Volunteer Center. Organizations from all over Central Indiana post about their volunteer needs; the perfect opportunity is waiting for you now!
  3. Make the most of your lunch hour. There’s a lot you can accomplish during your lunch hour besides just grabbing lunch. Try making it a priority to use your lunch hour to connect with colleagues and friends, read a book on your must read list or volunteer for a program like ReadUP.
  4. Revisit your retirement planning. If you haven’t started planning yet, it’s never too soon to get the ball rolling. It can be difficult or confusing to figure it all out – look here for some great resources that simplify this difficult topic.
  5. Get more connected to your city. An easy way to achieve this is through utilizing your city’s website, such as indy.gov. This is a great central hub to learn more about different committees that serve your city, government happenings, neighborhood services, local recreation and more.
  6. Give more to charity. A fun way to achieve this is designate a change jar and make a goal amount to place in it each week or month. Whenever you have extra coins or cash, throw it in and watch your change go towards making real change when you donate it.
  7. Learn something new. Have you always wanted to speak a foreign language? Learn a new instrument? Understand the world of nonprofits? Regardless of what you want to learn, carve out time each month to accomplish learning something new with an app, book, class or online lessons.
  8. Encourage your family to focus on their health. Whether it’s becoming more active or eating healthier, there are lots of ways to get your entire family involved in bettering their health. Jump IN for Healthy Kids shares great ideas and tips the whole family can get on board with!
  9. Join a new club or organization. If you’re passionate about United Way’s mission of fighting for the education, health, financial stability and basic needs of everyone in our community, consider joining one of our Affinity groups.
  10. Become an advocate for a cause close to your heart. You can help create lasting, positive change, right here in Central Indiana by becoming an advocate for a cause you care about. Find out how to become and advocate and make your voice heard here.

No matter what resolutions you choose to add to your list, it’s bound to be a great year. Looking for more ways to make 2018 the best year ever? Check out our 18 ways to volunteer in 2018 article next!
